Welsh hero Joe Calzaghe recorded his latest success Sunday evening by
winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award. The undisputed
world super-middleweight champion, who hasn't tasted defeat in his
fourteen years as a pro, cemented his legacy this year with a pulsating
victory over Denmark's Mikkel Kessler before 50,000 adoring fans at the
Millennium Stadium..
Calzaghe, 35, received the most votes from the British public to pick up the prestigious award.
Formula One star Lewis Hamilton, the hot favourite for the award and
most prominent sporting figure in Britain this year finished second,
while a bruised but ever-charming Ricky 'The Hitman' Hatton was third.
"I'm shocked - it's a massive honour and it caps off a great year for me," said Calzaghe. "I'm proud of it, it's a real achievement and also with my dad winning tonight. To get two boxers in the top three is amazing."
Enzo Calzaghe, whose played an integral role in boxing's return to the
fore of British sports scene, was named Coach of the Year
after guiding his son, Enzo Maccarinelli, Gavin Rees and Gary Lockett
